Making Memories For Your Soldier
November 2nd 2006 15:48
While my husband was in Iraq, I heard about a really great program put on by the Salvation Army. it was called Operation Pillow Talk. The gist of the program was this:
Take pillows of any size and decorate them. Some used pillow cases, I didn't because it never occured to me that he would actually use the pillow and even permanant marker fade with washings.
The pillow doesn't have to be fancy and you don't have to have an event to do this. Use the smaller pillows you can buy at the craft store or a full size pillow, it really doesn't matter.
Pick up some permanant markers as they come in many, many colors these days and go to town.
One of the nicer ideas I saw was the outline of a hand with the message inside the hand that said "Hold my hand while you sleep". your artistic talent is not going to be what matters in this case. As for me, I put on a ton of lipstick and kissed the pillow. Even now, after he slept with the pillow, sweat all over it and it's filthy, those lipstick prints are very faded but still there.
Guaranteed, this will be a cherished and personal gift from home.
If you have a large group of people this is something you can do for a large number of soldiers just to give them a touch of home in a place too far from home.
