Language...
November 7th 2006 04:09
Recently, I finished writing a book. A book about the language of the birds. Omenical in nature it can be used to foretell certain conditions for the one who can read it. A long forgotten art called Augury. Anyway, during my research on this book I discovered that the word was not first... silence was ...and the word divided the silence and conquered it, though not able to completely express nor capture it, again....
*Thoughts...*
....I discovered that language was first given to mankind during the age of Gemini, about 10,000 years ago - or so it goes. My point... telepathy... borne of silence... but, now in its divided state .... do we not also write poetry in an effort to re-unite the two halves back to the understanding of one... feeling... and communicating our own ... silence?
*Time to muse...*
Which brings to mind a post on accents and dialects within speech and an orble-philosopher with a view on all three….

But I seem to remember a couple of folk tales, from a later period, about eavesdropping to birds in the forest, as they exchange stories of their long travels, thinking that silly humans can't understand them.

Exactly.....Thanks for the link, good but incomplete knowledge there, the Greek form of Augury was so diametrically opposed to the Roman model. I may look at updating Wiki myself - my understanding is that anyone can do so, is that true? What a fabulous resource for humanity to have to piece together the missing pieces... wonderful... There is so much involved, too much to mention here... you can check out my website it has a little history, but the book has the most, anyway, here is a little bit more... since you're interested... so much more than flight paths...
Augury originally came down the line to median/modern history from the Hittites, Etruscans, Sicilians, Greeks, Arabians and Romans - as you know - it was very popular in Rome and enjoyed several renaissance periods, usually aligned with the rise and fall of empirical epochs and whim...Employed by the ruler the office of Augur was a high one indeed.
It was eventually by order of the Council of Nicea that Augury proper eventually became seen as a heresy most fowl, and moved to the priesthood, becoming punishable by death for those who practiced it outside of the established order. Of course, under such a heavy penalty, it quickly died out, but not before going to aural traditions like superstition, folklore, children's nursery rhymes and other such calloquial poetry and prose.
The practice of Augury proper eventually dissappeared completely during the dark ages : the saddest part being not the practice of this art, but the destruction of original recorded manuals written by the great masters on the subject, many dissapearing during the sacking and burning of great libraries like those in Alexandria.
So, rather than divination the augur was employed to consult the winged messengers after a decision was decided upon by conducting an auspices. The Augur would then go up on a hill and map out a templum (in the sky) and then conduct his Auspices (through observation of the birds that moved, flew, called and showed up in his Templum).
Woe be it to the Augur who fibbed or was caught corrupted, as it usually resulted in his head - well his life too, if he predicted the wrong out come of such a war.
My work is of the pioneering kind on Australian species, as you can imagine, is by no means definitive. In fact I am hoping someone will continue it. I conduct workshops and presentation talks and my book is a practical field guide, with 'how-to's' and an A-Z Avis Specio, based on many original Roman entries. This has been fascinating work as (for Australian species) there is no esoteric literature and I have been hanging out with Aboriginal Elders and amongst Dreamtime Legends to discover meanings and possible portents of native species. None of those Mediterranean types even had an inkling of their existence, let alone any specific portent they may hold in the flapping of their wings. (A pigeon by the way generally points at reconciliation and new beginnings). However, the ancients had an awesome cataloguing of the different owl species, the different Eagles and Hawks. They had added clouds and little furry four-legged mammals for variety but documents are hard to find and will (hopefully) appear in part two – the Advanced Augurs Guide.

I ended up with my first bird book by mistake. A friend of mine, upon learning of my new appreciation of birds, loaned me a bird book she had. My dogs ate it. *LOL* - I ordered her a new copy and one for myself as well.
My mother recently moved to Kentucky to be my neighbor. She had a mobile home established on my property. All her life, she's battled manic depression and has trouble maintaining interest in "life". Her first spring here, she fell in love with the birds and for her birthday this year, my sister got her bird-watching binoculars and a c.d./book of bird calls.
Too tired to focus much now, but must follow up with your website and book... I have a feeling your bird knowledge will resonate well with me.
Incidentally, my fourteen-year-old is terrified of birds - all shapes, sizes, and varieties. He has no explanation as to why and absolutely adores all other animals, but the birds scare him.

.. it is a fascinating subject although my website is still ...'so under construction'... I need to update things and text and can't log on lately...but the skeleton is there anyway...thanks so much for your interest ... I truly hope it doesn't dissapoint. My proofreader said she enjoyed the read immensly. It's not a big book only about 141 pages, but hopefully interesting.
I'm having so many problems with finding cost-effective book binders who will do a small run as I am self publishing and have to start with a small run of about 300...so it's in spirits hands for a minute...
What do you think of your son's fear... past life? sounds a bit like that to me... something there... maybe go and get a past life regression done..?
Lovely to talk to you again,
welcome back

I wondered of his fear of birds, but I'm certainly not grasping onto it, unless he was a worm or a fish in a past life. *LOL* - I'm sure there's a deeper meaning. To my knowledge, he's never been hurt or chased by a bird, although he did see several dive-bomb our dog, Pharaoh, when they tried to take him for walks. What's up with that, anyway... why do birds dive-bomb dogs for no apparent reason? Is it solely entertainment?

Ooh that does sound like prehistoric past life problems between Pterodactyls and Thrinaxodons working it’s way out.. doesn’t it? *lol* However, if it’s Magpies doing the dive bombing, then it’s most certainly entertainment only… they love it...... Dog, human, kids, cats… you name it. Our Australian strains are particularly into this form of entertainment and there are times of the year we cannot venture out on pushbikes etc… It sounds like their American cousins might be no better…?
*still lol-ing... picturesof you and the dog and the kids running from cheeky magpies I've seen*
