What Is A Hero
November 13th 2006 05:03
There is a line in a Keni Thomas song that goes something like "a hero is a scared man that doesn't walk away". I have always loved that line because it was the first description of a hero that ever made sense.
I am not one to consider sports or movies stars heros and goodness knows I don't want my kid using 99.999999% of them as a role model, I pray that as her parents my husband and I will be her role models.
It's interesting how service members define heroes. Most never see themselves as heroes and often belittle their own contribution because in some way in their minds it does not seem to be enough.
I know my husband was scared going into Iraq, I know he was also scared at 18 years old when he left his very small town in the Upper Pennisula of Michigan to join the Army because he honestly believed it was his duty to his country to serve. If you ask me it was his calling and when his retirement from the military comes around in 2008, I have to wonder if he will really turn in that request.
He felt an obligation to go to Iraq but he was scared when he left, he was also scared many times while he was there.
I can't imagine the courage it has to take for every man and woman who puts on a uniform to defend and protect their country, while most of us avoid the things that scared us, real heroes walking into their fears and don't back down when things get tense.
By no means do I intend to short change the many others in uniform such as our police and firefighters, these jobs require much of the same kind of courage and they have my deepest respect.
I agree with Keni Thomas a hero is a scared man(or woman) who doesn't walk away.
For those who are not familiar with Keni Thomas here is a link to his website, check him out (no, I am not getting a darn thing for this, I simply like and respect the man's music and his service to his country).
